The AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is widely recognized,in Canada, the USA, and overseas.
Reciprocal certifcation as a CSA W178.2 Welding Inspection is an important career benefit.

Before you start, download the Guide to Certification of Welding Inspectors - Canadian Edition. It will answer many of your questions.

Exam Registration
To register for the AWS Certified Welding Inspector Exam, please follow these steps:
  1. Download the CAWI/CWI Exam Application form for the December 2010 Examination.

  2. Complete the application form including notorizing the testimonial section and be sure to sign and date the application. As part of the application, complete the Visual Acuity Record Form which requires a Jaeger J2 and color perception eye exam by a professional eye examiner listed in the form. The form must be signed and dated by the eye examiner.

  3. The original copy of your application and your payment must be received by CASTI prior to October 22, 2010. Do not send your application directly to AWS. We recommend using courier delivery with tracking options when sending your exam application to CASTI at:

    Exam applications will not be accepted by fax, email, or any other means.

  4. You will be notified of your application status three to four weeks before the examination date.

AWS Reciprocity to CSA W178.2
The AWS Reciprocity Program is specifically designed for Canadian Welding Inspectors who have successfully completed the Canadian Standard CSA W178.2 examination and are currently holding a valid Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) card. The Canadian Welding Bureau levels II and III are equivalent to the AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and level I is equivalent to the Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI). CSA W178.2 Recognition of AWS QC1 Certified Welding Inspectors
The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) as the Administrator of CSA Standard W178.2 recognizes the welding inspector certifications granted by the American Welding Society (AWS), subject to the following limitations. For more information, see page 11 of Guide to Certification of Welding Inspectors - Canadian Edition. To apply for CSA W178.2 recognition of AWS QC1 Certified Welding Inspectors, please follow these steps:
  1. Download the CSA W178.2 Application for Welding Inspector Certification.

  2. Download the CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector Visual Acuity Record.

  3. Complete the application form. As part of the application, complete the Visual Acuity Record form. Answer "Yes" in Section 8 of the application form.

  4. Attach a copy of the Certificate and Wallet card issued by AWS. The AWS certification must still be valid. The AWS certification must be as a CAWI, CWI, or SCWI to AWS QC1.

  5. Send the completed application package to the Canadian Welding Bureau Regional Office.

CSA W178.2 Recognition of Recognition of API 510 Pressure Vessel and API 570 Piping Inspector Certifications
The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB), as the Administrator of CSA Standard W178.2, recognizes either the API 510 or API 570 certification granted by the American Petroleum Institute (API), subject to the following conditions. For more information, see page 13 of Guide to AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors - Canadian Edition. To apply for CSA W178.2 recognition of AWS QC1 Certified Welding Inspectors, please follow these steps:
  1. Download the CSA W178.2 Application for Welding Inspector Certification.

  2. Download the CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector Visual Acuity Record.

  3. Complete the application form. As part of the application, complete the Visual Acuity Record form. Answer "Yes" in Section 8 of the application form.

  4. Attach a copy of the Certificate and Wallet card issued by API. The API certification must still be valid.

  5. Send the completed application package to the Canadian Welding Bureau Regional Office.
