This is an introductory course that provides a basic understanding of the proper use and interpretation of ASME Section IX - Welding Qualifications Code and its related ASME construction codes. To accomplish this objective, the course starts with a 2-day review of ASME Section IX, followed by one day of studying the base metal metallurgy and welding metallurgy that ASME Section IX is based on. The fourth day covers the welding portions of related ASME construction codes (Section VIII-1, B31.1, and B31.3) and how ASME Section IX interacts with each, including the metallurgy previously covered through a series of workshops. This course is also intended to prepare exam candidates for ABSA Welding Examiner Paper #4 on Regulations and Codes and most parts of Paper #2 covering properties and structures of metals, welding metallurgy and material specifications (i.e., steel manufacturing will not be covered).

Who Should Attend

Inspectors, welders, welding supervisors, quality control personnel, technologists, and engineers involved with new welding procedure and welder qualifications for new fabrication, repairs, maintenance, and inspection for pressure vessel or piping. This course is also designed to assist ABSA Welding Examiner, Pressure Equipment Inspector and CSA W178.2 exam candidates, although it is not a prerequisite that you be an exam candidate.


Each participant will receive a digital CASTI Certificate of Completion with 32 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for attending all 4 days of the classroom training.

Evening tutorials are mandatory for exam candidates planning to challenge Alberta Welding Examiner Papers 2 and 4, and optional for all other attendees. Be prepared for 1 hour on Days 1 and 2, and for up to 3 hours on Day 3.

About the Instructor

Matthew Yarmuch MSc, PEng, IWE is a professional materials and welding engineer, involved in engineering consulting, quality management, research, training and project management. Matthew is a University of Alberta graduate BSc (Materials Engineering) and MSc (Welding Engineering).

Matthew is the president of MattCo Engineering Solutions Inc. and supports the energy, fabrication, and construction sectors. Matthew is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta and Chair of the Alberta Welder Optimization Committee (AWOC) and is active in code committees and local technical societies.
