Learning Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • recall the local Safety Code Act laws, pressure equipment safety regulations (PESR), and jurisdiction (ABSA) rules related codes and standards for new construction or in-service repair of ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 pressure vessels;
  • correctly reference the ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 code paragraph structure;
  • view listed ASME SA and SB specifications referenced in ASME II Parts A and B and related and material test reports (MTRs), including multiple marking, to ensure they are acceptable for the material ordered;
  • investigate, analyze, interpret, articulate, and apply the welding fabrication rules of ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 and apply them to when reviewing qualified welding procedure specifications (WPSs) to ensure they are suitable to weld on ASME VIII-1 pressure vessels;
  • identify and navigate the basic rules for ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 inspection and examination rules; and
  • recall the basic rules for ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 pressure testing rules for hydrostatic and pneumatic tests.

Required Code Documents

All participants must bring the ASME Section VIII, Division 1 to this class. Only Parts U, UG, UW, UCS, UHA, UHT, are required from ASME Section VIII, Division 1 (2019 Edition). This partial ASME code can be purchased from CASTI. The ASME Section VIII, Division 1 package only contains the specific portions of the code that are covered in this course. A course notebook will be provided to all participants by CASTI.

About the Instructor

John E. Bringas, P.Eng. is the President and Founder of Codes and Standards Training Institute (CASTI) and CASTI Publishing Inc. He is a professional engineer who has practiced metallurgical and materials engineering, and inspection since 1975.
