Getting Started: Alberta Welding Examiner

A Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency authorizes the holder to conduct Performance Qualification (PQ) tests on behalf of a testing organization while employed by that testing organization. All Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) authorized testing organizations are required to employ a Welding Examiner to conduct performance qualification tests.

NOTE: The following information is for candidates following AB-94 Welding Examiner Syllabus (Edition 2).

Welding Examiner

After a Welding Examiner candidate has successfully completed the four (4) examination papers, satisfactory eye examination results (20/30 correctable vision) must be submitted to the Administrator before a Welding Examiner certificate of competency will be issued. The candidate’s eye examination results shall be determined by an ophthalmologist, optometrist, or other recognized professional and the eye examination conducted within a period of one (1) year of submission to the Administrator.

Education and Experience Requirements

To take a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must meet at least one of the following criteria:

Diploma in Materials Engineering Technology exempt
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology

CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector Level 2 or Level 3; or AWS QC1 CWI or SCWI exempt exempt
Safety Codes Officer – Boiler Discipline

Note 1: Other qualifications may be considered under provisions that allow the Administrator to accept equivalencies. The candidate must have relevant experience, which would include involvement in the pressure equipment industry related to fabrication, inspection, repair, welding, design, quality control or operation. The candidate would also have suitable academic qualifications in recognized courses in welding, materials, ASME Codes and NDE.

Examinations: Papers 1 to 4
  • The examination consists of four (4) papers with 3.5 hours to complete (see summary link to AB-94 Welding Examiner Syllabus (Edition 2) below).
  • Each exam paper is closed-book, except for the Code reference material which is open-book.
  • The exam candidate must bring all reference Codes to the related exam; non-Code reference material is not allowed in the exams.
  • Each of the four exam papers are composed of multiple choice and short answer questions.

Renewals
  • Welding Examiner in Training has a three (3) year expiry date and is a non-renewable certificate
  • Welding Examiner expires three (3) years after the day it was issued.
