Welding Engineer
Summary
Welding engineering and inspection is the heart of the fabrication and maintenance work where our welding team is committed to meet or exceed our corporate engineering standards, applicable construction and repair codes, and related jurisdictional regulations.
Responsibilities
- Review and update existing welding procedure specifications (WPS)
- Review and update existing WPS data sheets
- Review and update existing welding inspection and testing procedures
- Provide codes and standards engineering and inspection support for all welding functions
- Prepare repair and maintenance WPSs and engineering strategies, particularly for in situ welding
- Welding process selection and optimization to reduce distortion at each stage of fabrication or repair
- Provide engineering support to minimize welding defects and repairs
- Provide engineering and inspection support to identify weld defects and remedial action for their repair
- Assist with welding and inspection equipment maintenance and new equipment purchases
- Ensure compliance with contract documents and requirements
- Ensure that all NDE of welds is performed in accordance with corporate and other related codes and standards with the ability to conduct a thorough root cause analysis of welding defects
- Periodic reviews of the company’s welding practices, WPSs, correction action plans, and quality management system
Education and Experience
- Professional engineer with CSA W47.1 Welding Engineer accreditation;
- Through knowledge of the metallurgy and weldability of carbon steels, low-alloy steels, alloy steels, and stainless steels;
- Manual, semi-automatic, and automatic welding related experience in industry;
- Experience with writing and qualifying WPSs to the following codes and standards;
- Thorough knowledge of industry codes, standards, and jurisdictional regulations, with examples such as:
- CSA W59
- CSA Z662
- ASME B&PV Sec. IX
- ASME B31.3;
- API 650 and API 653
- ASTM material standards
- CSA and AWS filler metal standards
- Experience with preparing and submitting all necessary welding documents to meet jurisdictional regulations and working with the various regulators;
- Experience with interaction and communication between shop floor and production office working with welders, inspection personnel, and engineering staff;
- Experience in preparation of technical proposals and reports;
- Experience in managing multiple projects at the same time;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly being able to write grammatically clearly and efficiently as well as with technical accuracy that would be used by the welder, welding supervisor, welding inspector, welding supplies purchaser, and management.
