Who Should Attend

Inspectors, welders, welding supervisors, quality control personnel, technologists, and engineers involved with new welding procedure and welder qualifications for new fabrication, repairs, maintenance, and inspection for pressure vessel or piping. This course is also designed to help prepare exam candidates for Alberta Welding Examiner (Papers 3 and 4) and CSA W47.1 Welding Engineer certifications. Workshop #1: ASME Section IX, Table QW/QB-422, P-No. and Group No.
  • Each attendee will develop the basis for establishing P-No. 1, Groups 1 to 4 as they appear in Table QW/QB422 by comparing base metal chemical composition, weldability, and mechanical properties.
  • This workshop will be reviewed several times during the course to further explain ASME Section IX requirements.
Workshop #2: Reviewing and Understanding Test Results for Procedure Qualification (QW-483)
  • Review a set of test results including:
    • ASME Section IX requirements for Test Reports
    • ASME Construction Code Requirements versus ASME IX Requirements
Workshop #3: Practicing with ASME Section IX, Section I, Section II Parts A and C, Section VIII-1, B31.1, and B31.3
  • As an exercise as part of developing a new WPS, each attendee will participate in this workshop to practice using:
    • ASME Section IX
    • Base Metal Specifications: ASME Section II Part A
    • Filler Metal Specifications: ASME Section II Part C
    • Construction Codes: ASME Section I, Section VIII-1, B31.1, and B31.3
  • At the completion of the Workshop, the instructor will interact with all attendees by discussing each Welding Variable, Filler Metal Selection, and Construction Code requirements as they relate to developing a WPS.

Learning self-assessment is performed through discussions, problem solving exercises, and workshops.

All participants must have a copy of the ASME Section IX code. If you require a copy, it can be purchased from CASTI when you register for the course.

About the Instructor

John E. Bringas, P.Eng. is the President and Founder of Codes and Standards Training Institute (CASTI) and CASTI Publishing Inc. He is a professional engineer who has practiced metallurgical and materials engineering, and inspection since 1975. He has also been certified as an API 510, 570, 653, 571, 577, and 580 inspector, an AWS Certified Welding Inspector, an Alberta In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspector and Welding Examiner, and CGSB certified NDE examiner in UT and RT.
